Finding a qualified professional may be a challenge. In today’s blog, we’ve compiled some of the essential questions to keep in mind when finding flooring contractors.

We hope this information will start a good conversation with a potential flooring installation company.

Is the flooring company qualified to do the work?

A hardwood floor installation company in good standing should be licensed and insured to be in this type of business.

Knowing if your potential flooring installer is licensed and insured will let you know if they have fulfilled the requirements to conduct work legally.

Knowing that the company is insured will also give you the peace of mind you need; if an issue arises, you can rest assured that it’s covered. Unexpected issues often happen; sometimes, these issues don’t even relate to the flooring project at all.

When it comes to a home remodeling project, you’ll be relieved to know that the company you are working with is insured.

Is the flooring company a member of the National Wood Flooring Association?

If a flooring company is a member of the NWFA, you can be sure that they are one of the best in the industry. Hardwood floor installation companies certified by the NWFA are dedicated to becoming proficient at the process. NWFA-certified installers also participate in continuing education to advance their skills.

What kind of warranty does the installer offer?

Hardwood flooring is one of the major investments you can do for your home. Thus, make sure that the contractor you decide to go with has an excellent and reliable warranty for their work.

Does the company have positive customer testimonials?

To know the quality of work of a flooring installer, ask them for references and reach out to them. As an alternative, you can also do your own research online.

Customers often go to review sites such as Google, Facebook, etc. to share their experience working with a contractor.
Remember that not everything you read online is gospel. This is especially true with customer reviews.

While you will certainly encounter some complaints or negative feedback about a company, you must not completely discount them because of it. Check for the validity of these complaints. Furthermore, see how the installer addressed these negative reviews.

How long will the project take?

This is an essential question to ask an installer. Knowing the timeline of the project will let you have realistic expectations of the work that needs to take place.  Knowing the timeline of the project also allows you to make the necessary plans and adjustments on your end. Ask your installer on the progression of the project. This includes when certain items will be delivered or the acclimation process period.

Ask if they will have to skip any days throughout the project; if the crew does not work on certain days, if certain products need to dry, etc.

How will the installer do the prep and clean-up of the space?

Prepping your home for hardwood floor installation can be disorganized. Before you begin work with your flooring project, ask the installer how they handle the prep and clean-up of your space.

Will they protect your light fixtures? Will they cover your large furniture and window furnishings? Will they take care of the disposal of your old floors?

While it may seem like the obvious, some installers don’t always include clean-up in their installation service.

How long will the acclimation period take?

Acclimation is a vital process in hardwood floor installation. Professional flooring contractors try their hardest to fulfill their clients’ design specifications in the specified timeline. However, the acclimation period is a critical step in the process that shouldn’t be overlooked.

How will payment be handled?

A contractor asking for payment before any work is even completed is a red flag. There are, however, exceptions to this. If the installer needs to get certain materials specific to your project, they may request for funds to get these particular items.

As a general rule, hardwood floor installation companies require a deposit at the start of the project and the rest of the payment upon completion of the work.
